Solar-Hydrogen & Oxygen Production System for Hospital in Philippines

The Purpose

An international team comprised of BPP Renewables (UK), Future Value Global (AUS & PNG), and Climate Inc. Foundation (Philippines) is conducting a feasibility study to design an innovative microgrid Green Hydrogen and Oxygen production system for the Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines.

As technology advances and becomes more cost-effective, Green Hydrogen is emerging as a viable clean energy solution to replace fossil fuels. This feasibility study aims to pave the way for future investments in accessible clean energy solutions for underdeveloped regions and critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, reducing risks and uncertainties.

Supported with funding by the Innovate UK ZE-Gen Programme, the team is collaborating with global technology suppliers and local partners for this innovative project.

Constraints

More than a third of Philippine hospitals face unreliable power and electricity supplies, and over half of Local Government Unit-owned hospitals lack access to clean drinking water for patients. This severely compromises the quality of healthcare they can provide.

Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital is particularly affected by expensive and unreliable power supply, with its reliance on fossil fuels exacerbated by climate change issues. Currently, the hydrogen’s electrolyser design doesn’t allow for direct use of the produced oxygen. This represents a missed opportunity, as oxygen is a valuable byproduct with diverse industrial applications that could improve the overall economic efficiency of the system.

Global Collaboration

The Consortium is forging new partnerships with UK and Philippine companies and agencies to advance the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the proposed system. They aim to achieve this through a first-of-its-kind pilot system demonstrator, backed by public funding from the ZE-Gen Programme. This program involves:

  • Phase 1: Feasibility – technology readiness and health needs assessment
  • Phase 2: Industrial Research – product development and testing
  • Phase 3: Experimental Development – pilot demonstration to validate the innovation at the hospital facility in the Philippines

In September 2024, BPP Renewables and Future Value participated in a UK delegation week-long trip to the Philippines, including a site visit to the Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital. The visit aimed to present project objectives to stakeholders, engage with public and private companies, and gain insights into the challenges associated with future system implementation.
